CONCLUSION
John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Barack Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emma Watson, five different people, with different reasons why they are famous, different reasons why they used their power and different reasons why they delivered their certain speech. This has as effect that they all have different goals and different ways of delivering their message to the public.
With the "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech of John F. Kennedy, he showed the Germans solidarity and gave them support during the times of the Cold War and the Berlin wall. You can see this in the language he uses in his speech. It's understandable and with his word use and the message he brings, he gives people hope. JFK doens't have to prove himself anymore, as president of the United States he has power and he has respect, so with his speech he doesn't try to persuade people that they should listen to him. He is giving a city hope and that's important.
Martin Luther King's goal of his speech "I have a dream" was for every American to get the same chance at succes, no matter what colour. So with his speech, King tried to convince people (mainly leaders) for equal rights for all people. He tried to end segregation and have equal rights for everyone and not people being judged by the colour of their skin. He also motivatedhis followers to continue to demonstrate, boycott and protest until they were granted full equality and priviledges as any citizen of the USA. The persuasion in his speech is visible in the word use and the way he constructed his sentences.
The speech that made Barack Obama president was written and delivered to convince people to vote for Obama as the next president of the United States. This means that in his speech he used a lot of persuasive language and he connected with the audience very well. At that time, Obama was an unknown man and there were many different kinds of people in the audience that all had different points of views on how a country should be governed. Obama made sure that he connected with most of them and made the people belief in him, he made them belief that he would make a difference, that he would govern the country the way the majority of the people wanted the country to be governed.
A totally different kind of speech is the speech Emma Watson delivered at the HeForShe event, she talked about feminism and how people think of feminists. She talked about equal rights between men and women. Emma Watson is an actress who is most famous for the role of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies. therefore her audience is a lot different from the speech givers above. She also has a different goal with her speech, which is to make feminism not a bad thing and to create awereness for equal rights for men and women.
Leonardo DiCaprio tried to convince people that global warming is a growing problem and we should limit the effects of it. He, as a famous actor can reach a broad public and so deliver his message to many. He is not a scientist which means that he had to do his very best to make sure that people belief in what he told, with statistics and research done by scientists he was able to show that what he told us was true and that we could believe him. With his language use and also by showing the audience that he had a lot of knowledge on what he was speaking about, he tried to persuade people that global warming is a growing problem.
Concluding, the five speech givers all had a different purpose and a different background as a person. but they all used figuaritive language to show their point of view and to persuade the audience of their truth. If you are a powerful person, like JFK, you can tell your audience anything without much detail and people will still believe you. But a person like Emma Watson, who has not many power needs to take more effort and give more than just a story to make people agree with her.
